RAY OPTICS Note I. If ray crosses two surface which are inclined to each other then we use the concept of prism II. If ray crosses two plain parallel surfaces then we use concept of slab. A ray of light makes an angle of 60 on one of the faces of a prism and suffers a total deviation of 30 on emergence from the other face. If the anlge of the prism is 30 , show that the emergent ray is perpendicular to the other face. Also calculate the refractive index of the material of the prism.

RAY OPTICS Note I. If ray crosses two surface which are inclined to each other then we use the concept of prism II. If ray crosses two plain parallel surfaces then we use concept of slab. A ray of light makes an angle of 60o on one of the faces of a prism and suffers a total deviation of 30 on emergence from the other face. Ifthe anlge of the prism is 30, show that the emergent ray is perpendicular to the other face. Also calculate the refractive index of the material ofthe prism. 30. Sal3 The angle of deviation = (h + Here, = 30 , i1 = 600; A = 30 Hence 30 -60 +,-30 -30 + i2 -A 2 The angle of emergence is zero. This means that the emergent ray is perpendicular to the seconc face.

If ray crosses two plain parallel surfaces then we use concept of slab A ray of light makes an angle of 60o on one of the faces of a prism and suffers a total deviation of 30 on emergence from the other face. Ifthe anlge of the prism is 30, show that the emergent ray is perpendicular to the other face. Also calculate the refractive index of the material of the prism 3o Sal3 The angle of deviation = (il + Here, = 30 , i.-600, A = 30 Hence 30 -60 + i, -30 -30 + i, -A 2 The angle of emergence is zero. This means that the emergent ray is perpendicular to the seconc face. siep 2: Since i0, the anlge of incidence at the second face is zero. Sin sin 60 we know, = sinr1 - sin 30 3/2 1/2 Now, or, r, A= 300 /3 = 1.732
